Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I have been serving the Metro Detroit area since 1978. My original office is located at 12912 East 8 Mile Rd. In 2005, I decided to relocate my clinic to a larger location on Gratiot Ave. at Martin in Roseville when I learned about a new, FDA-cleared, breakthrough medical technology called "Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression". It helps heal herniated and bulging discs without drugs, injections or surgery. I continue to maintain a very high success rate because I only accept people who are candidates for the procedure and who I truly believe I can help.
What is your primary product or service?
My primary role as a chiropractor is to correct the underlying cause of the problem, not just treat symptoms, but to help improve the function of the nervous and musculoskeletal system in patients, so their bodies can heal themselves. I work with the understanding that true healing comes from within, and what is most important is to remove any interference the body has at “fixing” itself. When people feel better here, it means they are actually getting better, because we are not trying to just “cover-up” their symptoms.
I believe chiropractic care is very important to America’s health care system today because it aims to work on the root cause of the problem and tries to avoid ‘running circles around’ treating symptoms with multiple expensive drugs, many of which have side effects which leave the person worse off than when they started. I recognize medications are sometimes necessary, but I feel the public benefits by trying non-invasive, conservative healthcare measures like chiropractic and massage, before drugs and surgery. To put it simply, “Chiropractic First, Medicine Second, Surgery Last.”
Therefore we offer chiropractic adjustments, strengthening exercises (hi-tech & low-tech), massage therapy (with nationally certified massage therapists), and now non-surgical spinal decompression for both lumbar and cervical candidates. This includes whiplash patients, many of whom we’ve saved from having to have surgery on their spinal discs. You can view videos of them speaking about their stories on our website: www.DetroitBackPain.com
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Over 35 years ago, someone suggested to me that I should be a chiropractor. At that time, I didn't even know what one was. I am sure glad they did, because Chiropractic has changed my life for the better and I am grateful to have been able to positively affect the lives of thousands of people throughout my career.
You never know how something you may say or do to someone, no matter how small, can affect the lives of thousands of people in the future…
I invite anyone interested in becoming a chiropractor to contact me, the world needs many more chiropractors. I am sure glad a doctor took the time out of his day to answer questions for me when I was in college.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
For over 30 years, I have built a reputation on being straight and up-front with people and providing them options for care. I believe it’s most effective when the patient is educated to empower themselves to choose what’s best for them.
We continually strive to be up-to-date on multiple chiropractic techniques (including non-force) and instruments so we can provide the best patient care outcomes. While this requires a lot of extra work, expense and travel out of the office, we benefit because it makes us better and able to help more people.
Regarding spinal decompression, we are members of Spinal Aid Centers of America, the largest group of non-surgical spinal decompression specialists in the world. We have weekly webinar meetings to discuss new protocols and cases, and also meet in-person multiple times per year. This helps us provide a higher standard of care for our patients, especially if they are a tough case. I will not name names, but several local doctors (chiros, MDs, dentists), some of whom own decompression tables, came to treat with us when they personally needed care for their own spinal discs.
We also specialize in treating auto accident injuries. Many spinal discs problems in people are actually caused from auto collisions, even minor ones. I believe everyone should have their spine checked after an auto accident, to make sure there are no ‘hidden’ injuries that come to the surface later.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We consolidated 3 locations into one up-to-date location on Gratiot in Roseville. We are a family run business, running a family chiropractic care office.
Provide detailed directions to your location
Our new location is located on Gratiot at Martin Rd (11 ½ mile), just north of I-696. It is right down the street from Costco, near Randazzo's produce market. Many patients arrange their appointment times on the same day they shop; we do our best to accommodate the public.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept cash, check, credit card, Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurances. We also take assignment on auto injury claims and will work, if necessary, with your attorney on an injury claim. Also, we are members of ChiroHealthUSA & Ameriplan, networks which provide generous discounts to uninsured and underinsured patients.
Which areas do you service?
I have always said, “I serve the East side of Detroit, from Woodward to the water.” However, we have noticed since we’ve opened our new location, many old patients who moved north and west out of Detroit, have returned to come see us again because we are so close to the freeways, I-696 and I-94. They say they missed us, and are happy it is easy for them to get chiropractic care here again. We have even had some decompression patients come from over 100 miles away in the Michigan thumb area, because that service is not available up there.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I have owned and ran my chiropractic clinic for over 33 years now, how time flies! But now I have the benefit of having my son, Dr. Jeffrey Lupo, and daughter, Dr. Jessie Lupo, work alongside me at this new Gratiot Avenue location in Roseville, MI.
What are your hours of operation?
We believe it is important to be available to the public, so we are open 6 days a week. M-Th: 8:30am to 6pm, F: 8:30am to 5pm, Sat: 9am to 12pm.
I see many families, because children benefit greatly from chiropractic care, so we are available on Saturday mornings. Therefore, children will be able to reap the benefits of regular chiropractic care visits without missing any school.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
Parents bringing in the rest of their family and children too! Kids respond well to chiropractic care, from colic to asthma, ear infections, bed wetting and even bowel issues.
